Baseball Wraps Up First Week Of Spring Practice

January 31, 2004 | Baseball

Battling cold temperatures, the Oklahoma baseball team completed its first week of spring practice on Saturday. With their opening game less than two weeks away, the Sooners began team practices on Wednesday and held four-straight days of seven inning intrasquad games. The team had participated in individual workouts since returning to campus for the beginning of the semester.

"I thought the makeup was real good and the kids were focused this week," said OU head coach Larry Cochell. "We played in some tough conditions this week, but the players still played with a lot of enthusiasm and stayed competitive.

"They had to really concentrate in this type of weather and they only made a minimal amount of mistakes."

With the cold temperatures working in their favor over the last couple of days, the Sooner pitching staff took advantage and controlled a majority of the intrasquad games. Each member of the staff saw time on the mound and were held to a 65 pitch count limit during the first week. The pitchers' pitch counts will increase each week heading into the first game with Gonzaga on February 13.

"Our pitchers have looked sharp this week and we like where they are at this stage in their preparation for the season," said Cochell.

Joining the team at the beginning of the semester was junior infielder Kyle Bradburry. Bradburry, who spent the last two seasons playing at El Camino College in California, completed his academic requirements in the fall and joined the team at the beginning of the semester to compete for a starting job in the infield. A two-time first team all-conference selection while at El Camino, the Mustang, Okla., native batted .382 with five home runs and 32 RBI last year.

"He's going to make a large contribution to our ball club," commented Cochell. "He's got some good power and has already proven to be a solid defensive player."

The team will take the day off on Sunday and return to workouts and begin another stretch of intrasquad games next week.
