2003-04 campaign looks promising for Sooners

Norman, Okla. For the third time in the last two weeks, the University of Oklahoma women's basketball team has been tabbed among the top-25 teams for the upcoming 2003-04 season. Most recently, the Sooners were tabbed No. 18 nationally in the Street & Smith's Magazine Top 25 women's basketball preseason poll. OU also has been consided the No. 10 and No. 12 team in women's hoops according to SLAM Magazine and Women's Basketball Top 20, respectively.

Head Coach Sherri Coale returns four starters and an impressive 78.8 percent of the scoring and 69.2 percent of the rebounding from last year's team that qualified for its fourth consecutive NCAA Tournament with an overall record of 19-13. Coale also welcomes back senior Caton Hill (Ada, Okla.), freshman Erin Higgins (Oklahoma City, Okla.) and freshman Casey Walker (Houston, Texas). Each missed the 2003 season with injuries.

Senior Maria Villarroel (Margarita, Venezuela) and All-Big 12 second teamers Dionnah Jackson (St. Louis, Mo.), a junior, and Chelsi Welch (Plainview, Texas), a sophomore, are the Sooners top three scorers from a year ago. Welch also garnished co-Big 12 Freshman of the Year honors and earned Freshman All-American honorable mention accolades by womencollegehoops.com last season.

Oklahoma opens its 2003-04 season with a pair of exhibition games on Nov. 13 and Nov. 18 at the Lloyd Noble Center. For a complete schedule please visit OU's official website at www.soonersports.com.
