Head Coach Sherri Coale has assembled a strong core for 2003-04 campaign.
Norman, Okla. Oklahoma women's basketball team has been tabbed No. 10 nationally in the SLAM Magazine Top 15 preseason poll. OU returns an impressive 78.8 percent of its scoring and 69.2 percent of its rebounding for the 2003-04 season. In addition, Head Coach Sherri Coale welcomes back four starters and seven letterwinners from last year's squad that went 19-13 and advanced to its fourth consecutive NCAA Tournament.
Senior Maria Villarroel (Margarita, Venezuela) and All-Big 12 second teamers Dionnah Jackson (St. Louis, Mo.), a junior, and Chelsi Welch (Plainview, Texas), a sophomore, are the Sooners top three scorers from a year ago. Welch also garnished co-Big 12 Freshman of the Year honors and earned Freshman All-American honorable mention accolades by womencollegehoops.com last season.
OU also welcomes back three redshirt players in senior All-America candidate Caton Hill (Ada, Okla.), freshman Erin Higgins (Oklahoma City, Okla.) and freshman Casey Walker (Houston, Texas). Hill became the school's all-time leading defensive rebounder with 594 before being sidelined four games into the 2003 season. She also holds OU's career record for most double-doubles with 29.
Oklahoma opens its 2003-04 season with a pair of exhibition games on Nov. 13 and Nov. 18 at the Lloyd Noble Center. For a complete schedule please visit OU's official website at www.soonersports.com.
