Bookout One of 50 Wooden Award Candidates

NORMAN, Okla. University of Oklahoma sophomore forward Kevin Bookout is one of 50 preseason John R. Wooden Award candidates, the awards preseason selection committee announced today. The Wooden Award, presented to the nations most outstanding basketball performer, is generally considered the most prestigious individual player honor in college basketball.

The 6-8, 260-pound Bookout is one of 13 sophomores on the 50-player list. He was named to the Big 12 All-Freshman Team last year after averaging 9.4 points and a team-high 5.9 rebounds, and shooting a league-best .587 from the field for the 27-7 Sooners. He posted OUs highest freshman scoring average since 1991 and the highest frosh rebounding average since 1998. Bookout, who also earned outdoor track All-America honors in the shot put in June, is currently playing basketball for the NIT All-Star Team in the Bahamas.

The 2004 Wooden Award ceremony, which will include the presentation of the Wooden Award All-America Team and the presentation of the Legends of Coaching Award, will be held at The Los Angeles Athletic Club on Saturday, April 10, and will be telecast live on CBS.

Last year, OUs Hollis Price finished third in Wooden Award voting behind recipient T.J. Ford (Texas) and runner-up David West (Xavier). Price was also named Big 12 Player of the Year.
