Welch Scores 15-Points in Fourth Quarter

USA women's basketball falls to China 97-54
KYOUNGJU, South Korea Sophomore sensation Chelsi Welch nailed five of seven three-pointers (71.4%) in the fourth quarter for a personal- and team-best 15 points in World University Games action against China. Welch also had one rebound and was credited with one defensive stop in 13:02 minutes of play. The USA women's basketball team lost to China, 97-54, at Sorabol College Gymnasium Tuesday in the opening game of the second round.
China's seasoned offense was no match for Team USA in the first game of second-round pool-play action at the World University Games. The Chinese team outscored the USA 53-24 in the second half and shot a sizzling 61 percent for the game.
"We got beat by a great team," head coach Bill Fennelly (Iowa State) said. "We still have three games left to play and part of learning as a player and a person is to see who will rally. Our focus has to be on finishing strong."
China edged the USA 19-15 in the first quarter, but widened the gap in the second stanza with an 11-3 run late in the period to give them their biggest lead of the game (44-30) at the break. Team USA drained all six of its field goals in the second quarter, but went 0-of-3 from behind the arc and had seven turnovers. China sank six three-pointers in the first half, hitting 9-of-16 in the game.
The USA squad managed only five points in the third quarter, giving China a 72-35 advantage headed into the final period. Chelsi Welch (Oklahoma) came off the bench and drilled 5-of-7 three-pointers, all in the fourth quarter, finishing with a team-high 15 points. Heather Schreiber (Texas) was the only other USA player to score in double figures with 10 points, which she scored in the first quarter.
Team USA edged China 23-22 on the boards, but had 30 turnovers. China's potent offense was also evident at the charity stripe, where the Chinese converted on 16-of-19 free throws.
The USA faces Serbia-Montenegro Wednesday at 3 p.m. The Americans will have another game on Thursday before heading into the final classification round on Saturday.
