Norman, Okla. The war in Iraq has not only affected adults, but also middle school students who are about to enter the sixth grade. Due to the deployment of several National Guard leaders in the local area, the University of Oklahoma women's basketball team is stepping in to assist with Camp Turning Points at Irving Middle School Saturday, Aug. 16, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Assistant Principal Rita Jack called upon the Sooners to serve as squad leaders in a scavenger hunt, which will assist the incoming sixth graders with classroom locations and getting to know other classmates before the start of the academic year. Jack also has the team taking students through obstacle courses and teaching them how to unlock lockers. The goal of this orientation is to assist with the students transition to middle school.
The school district and local community partners have teamed together to sponsor Camp Turning Points. Registration is from 8:15 to 9 a.m. Students can bring a sack lunch or buy pizza for $2. T-shirts are available for $3.
