Sooner Hurlers Shine On Summer Baseball Circuits

A pair of University of Oklahoma pitching duos have emerged as some of the top performers on the collegiate summer baseball scene this off-season. Junior David Purcey and senior Mike Swindell have teamed up to become instrumental members of the Orleans Cardinals of the Cape Cod League, while seniors Charlie House and Casey Brown top the pitching staff of their Arizona-Nevada Desert League-leading Havasu Heat.
After earning Summer All-American honors from Baseball America last year following a standout offseason in the Alaska Baseball League, Purcey is putting his talent on display this summer in the Cape Cod League. Playing alongside fellow Sooner hurler Swindell, Purcey has established himself as one of the Orleans Cardinals five regular starters. His 2.08 ERA ranks second amongst the squads starting unit and, as recently as July 6, his 29 strikeouts was the fifth highest total in the league. Purcey has also allowed only nine hits and 11 walks in his 21.2 innings of work thus far.
As a member of the Cardinals relief corps, Swindell has been putting up impressive numbers of his own. In five relief appearances, Swindell has emerged the winner in two of those contests while allowing only 10 hits in 13 innings. The figure that stands out the most is his 15 strikeouts in 13 innings of work, including an impressive 3:1 strikeout-to-walk ratio.
Across the country, a second Sooner pitching duo is also making its mark in a summer league. House and Brown are enjoying solid stints as starters for the Havasu Heat. House, a righthander who saw limited action in relief for OU last year, has become a starter for the Heat and currently ranks in the top ten of two categories in the National Baseball Congress (NBC) national statistics. House ranks in a tie for eighth in wins with four and is tied for first with a flawless 0.00 ERA. He is also only one of three pitchers in his league to boast an ERA of 0.00.
Not to be outdone, Brown is not far off Houses pace with his 0.61 ERA that ranks sixth-best in the league. House and Brown are also neck-and-neck in strikeouts with 28 and 25, respectively, which are the fifth and sixth best totals in the league, respectively. Both pitchers have kept their strikeout totals high and their walks low as House sports a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 10:1, while Brown is nearly just as good at 9:1.
Several other Sooners are fine-tuning their skills on collegiate teams this summer including sophomore infielder Russell Raley (Anchorage Glacier Pilots), senior catcher Spencer Wyman (Topeka Capitals) and sophomore outfielder Scott Rooker (Athletes In Action).
