Sooner Wrestling Inks Premier Recruit

June 04, 2003 | Wrestling

The University of Oklahoma wrestling team added one of the most talented prep wrestlers with the signing of Brandon Palmer of Durham, N.C. Palmer finished his prep career as the winningest high school wrestler in North Carolina history by recording a 218-20 record while at Riverside High School. Palmer was coached to three state finalist honors and two state championships by Walt Tolarachyk.

"We are extremely excited about Brandon Palmer," said head coach Jack Spates. "Brandon is one of the most talented kids that I have ever met off the mat. That talent is only matched by his excellent technique, great athletic ability and passion to succeed on the mat. We expect Brandon to contend immediately for the starting position at 133 pounds and eagerly welcome him to the Sooner family."

The Palmer family is no stranger to Big 12 competition as Palmer's older brother, Austin, was a collegiate wrestler at Iowa State. At ISU, the elder Palmer was a two-time NCAA tournament qualifier.

Palmer recently completed a post graduate year at Blair Academy in Blairstown, N.J. He has a 3.5 GPA and is an accomplished painter and musician who has his own CD. Palmer plans to major in visual arts.
