NORMAN, Okla. - Nissen Emery Award winner Daniel Furney, assistant coach Guard Young and senior Heath Mueller qualified as all-around competitors to June's USA Gymnastics Championships at the national qualifier in Ann Arbor, Mich., last weekend. The USA Championships take place June 20-22, in Milwaukee, Wis., and will be the deciding factor for the rosters of the World University Games, World Championships and Pan American Games.
Furney had pre-qualified to the USA Championships thanks to his 2003 NCAA All-Around Championship, but still competed and put together a four event score of 35.575. Young, a current member of the USA National Team, was also pre-qualified but competed on four events as well, scoring 35.525.
"Honestly, I wasn't even watching the scores," Young said. "This was just preparation for nationals for me. It's always good to come out and see the best gymnasts in the country, and where I am in comparison to them. Competing always gets you going and, overall, I'm happy with how I did. Now I just want to go out and hit my routines, 12-for-12, at USAs and, hopefully, end up right up there in the top group."
Senior Heath Mueller, coming off his first NCAA All-America honor, put on a solid showing in the all-around with a score of 51.425. This marks the first time in Mueller's career that he has made the USA Championships.
Two-time NCAA Champion Josh Landis, junior David Henderson and 2003 All-American Jamie Henderson missed the cut. David Henderson had an all-around score of 50.10 and Jamie Henderson scored 51.20. Landis only competed on five events with a personal best of 9.0 on high bar. The trio qualified for the championships in 2002.
In other Oklahoma gymnastics news, 2003 Still Rings All-American Brett Covey will be competing in the Canadian National Championships May 20, 22, and 24. Covey will compete on still rings, parallel bars and high bar. Tuesday and Thursday's competitions are for national team roster spots, while Saturday is the event finals.
