Oklahoma Hitters Stifled By Missouri Hurler In 6-1 Loss

May 16, 2003 | Baseball

COLUMBIA, Mo. - Missouri starting pitcher Justin James handcuffed Oklahoma hitters in game one of OU's final Big 12 Conference series as the Sooners fell 6-1 to the Tigers Friday night at Phi Delta Theta Stadium at Simmons Field. James allowed only one run on six hits in the first complete game effort of his career. OU senior second baseman Eddie Cornejo had the most success against James on the night as he collected two of the Sooners' six hits in the game and drove in the team's only run. Outmatched Oklahoma starting hurler Mark Roberts fell to 5-6 on the year with the loss as the Sooners dropped to 21-28 overall and 9-16 in the Big 12. Missouri improved to 33-17 overall and 14-10 in the league.

The Sooners managed to score their lone run in the top of the eighth inning as freshman left fielder LaFringe Hayes (1-for-4) got things started by hustling around the base path for a one out triple. Cornejo then drove in Hayes with a ground out to second base.

Two of Oklahoma's other best scoring chances came in the fourth and sixth innings. With runners in scoring position at second and third base in both innings, James fanned OU junior catcher Spencer Wyman (1-for-4) in both instances to record two of his nine strikeouts in the game and end the Sooners' scoring threat.

Missouri grabbed an early one run lead in the bottom of the first inning. A two-out double by left fielder Ryan Rallo brought home first baseman Cody Ehlers who had reached second base on a fielder's choice and a wild pitch.

Several Sooner miscues led to four more runs in the fourth and fifth innings. In the fourth, MU right fielder Kyle Johnson each base on a fielding error by OU first baseman Matt Bose (1-for-3) and was eventually balked home by Roberts to give the Tigers a 2-0 advantage.

A throwing error by Wyman allowed the lead off batter in the fifth frame to reach third base and score on a follow up double by Missouri shortstop Ian Kinsler. A second double by Tigers first baseman Cody Ehlers drove in Kinsler, while Ehlers moved around to cross home plate on a ground out to second base.

The Tigers manufactured their sixth and final run of the game in the sixth frame as a lead off base hit moved around the bases to score on a sacrifice fly.

OU senior Austin Mix relieved Roberts to start the seventh inning and held MU scoreless over the final two frames. He fanned two batters in his brief outing to pull to within four strikeouts of breaking the school's all-time strikeout record. Mix now owns 291 career strikeouts and is within striking distance of the career leader Mark Redman who owns the mark at 294.

Roberts finished his outing giving up six runs (only three earned) on six hits while walking and striking out a pair.

Game two of the three-game set will take place tomorrow night at 6:30 p.m. at Phi Delta Stadium at Simmons Field. The contest will pit Oklahoma lefty David Purcey (2-3) against Missouri righthander Garrett Broshuis (5-2) on the mound.
