NORMAN, Okla. - Nine Oklahoma baseball players were named to the 2003 Academic All-Big 12 Conference team as released by the league offices on Tuesday. The Sooners boast the most honorees of any of the other nine league members that support a baseball team as four players garnered first team selections and five more were named to the second team. Junior hurler Buddy Blair was OU's only repeat performer as the business management major was selected to the first team list for the second consecutive year. In addition, all five active seniors on this year's squad were named to the academic team.

Joining Blair on the first team were senior center fielder Reggie Willits and sophomores Matt Bose and Greg Kish who are both finishing up their University Studies requirements. Willits, a management information systems major, picked up his second academic accolade within a week after he was recently recognized as a Verizon Academic All-District second team selection.

Four seniors and a junior rounded out Oklahoma's second team picks. Seniors Luke Alexander (marketing), Matt Arkison (business management), Eddie Cornejo (sociology) and Austin Mix (sociology/criminology) and junior Wayne Baker (aerospace engineering) made their first appearances on the prestigious list.

In order to obtain a first team selection, players must have maintained a grade point average of 3.2 or better (either cumulative or for the two previous semesters) and must have participated in 60 percent of his team's scheduled contests. For a second team nomination, the GPA requirements are for those who have a 3.00 to 3.19 and meet the participation demands. Pitchers must have pitched at least one inning per game played by the team or have appeared in 35 percent of their team's total games. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have played for at least two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
