Oklahoma Run-Rules Kansas State In 22-6 Win

MANHATTAN, Kan. - A day after putting up 10 runs on 16 hits against the Wildcats, Oklahoma bettered the game two effort in a 22-6 seven innning run-rule win over Kansas State Sunday afternoon at Frank Myers Field at Tointon Family Stadium to give the Sooners their third straight Big 12 Conference series victory. The Sooner offense exploded for its most runs in a game since the 1998 season when they put up 24 runs in a single contest which also came against the Wildcats. Nine different Sooners accounted for the 18 hits led by freshman left fielder LaFringe Hayes and senior second baseman Eddie Cornejo who each had three hits and three RBI a piece. OU starting pitcher Buddy Blair picked up the win to improve to 4-6 on the year and move the team's mark to 21-26 overall and 9-15 in the Big 12. The loss sent KSU to 13-36 overall and 3-21 in the league.

Oklahoma recorded two large scoring innings with eight runs in the fourth and nine more coming in the seventh frame. The Sooners' nine run frame in the top of the seventh inning tied the team's season best for runs scored in a single inning which also occurred in against Southern Illinois in early March.

Blair started for the Sooners and worked the first six frames before giving way to junior reliever Mike Swindell in the seventh. Blair fell two strikeouts shy of his career high with seven strikeouts and gave up only three runs scattered with single runs in the first, fourth and sixth frames. His line finished off with only two walks. Swindell gave up the final three runs in the seventh inning on a three run homer by Kansas State left fielder Pat Maloney.

Oklahoma leveled the first of its two big blows in the top of the fourth inning as it batted around the order and scored eight more runs to open up a 13-1 lead. OU capitalized with two bases loaded walks to bring home the first two runs of the frame. With the bases still full of Sooners, sophomore right fielder Greg Kish (2-for-2) was hit by a pitch to drive in a run and keep the bases loaded for junior shortstop Denver Kitch (2-for-5) who brought in another run with a RBI-single. Senior designated hitter Luke Alexander (0-for-3) and freshman third baseman Russell Raley (0-for-4) drove in consecutive runs on an error and a fielder's choice, respectively. Hayes then singled in his final two runs of the contest following a single by senior center fielder Reggie Willits (3-for-5).

The Sooners scored all nine runs before an out was recorded in the top of the seventh inning. Sophomore first baseman Matt Bose (1-for-4), junior catcher Spencer Wyman (2-for-4), freshman pinch hitter Scott Rooker (1-for-1), sophomore pinch hitter Tyler Johnson (1-for-1), Kitch and Cornejo all factored in to the scoring with RBI-base hits.

In the first inning, Hayes singled home Willits, who had doubled in the previous at bat, for the first of three first inning runs. The second run came when Cornejo continued the string of hits and drove in Hayes with a RBI-single. Kish then capped off the scoring with a two-out RBI-single which plated Cornejo.

The Sooners then scored single runs in the second and third frames to extend their lead to 5-1. Hayes again drove in Willits to account for the run in the second and then a double play ball with no outs and the bases loaded brought home a run in the third inning.

Texas-Arlington comes to Norman on Tuesday to face Oklahoma in its final home game of the season. The game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. It will be "Two For One Tuesday" where the purchase of an adult general admission ticket will get you a second one for free. Other promotions during the game will be $.50 hot dogs and small Cokes, Baseball Bingo and OU Cheerstixs will be given away prior to the game.
