Sooner Men's Tennis Defeated By No. 13 Texas At Big 12 Championships

NORMAN, Okla. - The 75th-ranked and seventh-seeded University of Oklahoma men's tennis team was eliminated in the quarterfinals of the Big 12 Men's Tennis Championships by 17th-ranked and second-seeded Texas, 4-0, Friday afternoon at the Plaza Tennis Center in Kansas City, Mo. The Sooners dropped to 15-10 overall and 1-7 versus Big 12 opponents while the Longhorns improved to 17-5 and 7-1 in conference.

The Sooners narrowly missed winning the doubles point but posted an impressive victory at No. 2 where Sooners Matt Long (Fort Worth, Texas) and Alexei Ivanov (Izhevsk, Russia) defeated the conference No. 2 double's position champions Jimmy Haney and Peter Stoer, 8-5. That win avenged a 9-8 loss to the same duo earlier this season in Norman. Long and Ivanov, who finished second in the Big 12 at No. 2 doubles, improved their record to 12-2 at No. 2 and 18-4 overall.

OU senior Chris Mitchell (Tulsa, Okla.) and freshman Tommy Garrison (Enid, Okla.) gave the Big 12's No. 1 double's position champions Jean Simon and Jose Zarhi all they could handle but were defeated in a tie-breaker by the 22-ranked duo, 9-8. The Longhorns clinched the match in singles with victories at the No. 1, 3 and 6 positions.
