TULSA, Okla. - After Oklahoma threatened with three runs in the middle part of the game, Oklahoma State pulled away in the final innings to top the Sooners 8-3 in the first game of The Bank of Oklahoma Bedlam Series presented by the Oklahoma Ford Dealers Friday night at Driller's Stadium. The Sooners (14-24, 2-14 Big 12) had trouble the entire game with putting away the Cowboys (28-13, 10-6 Big 12) as OSU scored but one run with two outs in an inning. Both starting hurlers turned in complete game efforts as OU starter Mark Roberts' record evened at 4-4 with the loss, while OSU's Scott Baker (8-4) was credited with the win.
The Sooners fell into an early 3-0 hole in the first inning after the Cowboys plated three two out runs courtesy of an OU error. With runners on first and second base and two outs, Oklahoma right fielder Matt Arkison (0-for-4) dropped the third out on a deep fly out to right. The error allowed both baserunners to score and placed OSU catcher Jason Jaramillo, who hit the dropped fly ball, in scoring position at second base. Two batters later, a base hit by second baseman Kenny Hansley brought Jaramillo home to score.
Oklahoma put a run on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth frame to draw within two runs of Oklahoma State at 3-1. Sophomore designated hitter Matt Bose (1-for-3) delivered a two out-single to center field to drive in senior center fielder Reggie Willits (1-for-4) who led off the inning with a double.
OSU spotted more runs in the bottom of the inning as a second two out-rally accounted for two more Cowboy scores. State strung together three straight hits ending with a two RBI-triple by right fielder Lyndsey Simmons to make it 5-1 in favor of OSU.
OU continued to score consecutive runs in the fifth and sixth innings to again pull to within two runs at 5-3. In the fifth, junior catcher Spencer Wyman (1-for-4) led off with a solo homer to left-center field, while Bose plated his second run of the contest with a ground out to third base to score Willits from third.
However, Oklahoma State put the game out of reach for good with three runs in its final two at bats. OSU's two runs in the seventh frame came off a solo home run by center fielder Jose Virgil and back-to-back doubles. In the eighth, shortstop Chris Gutierrez belted his first home run of the season to left field for the final margin of victory.
The second game of the series moves to the SBC Bricktown Ballpark in Oklahoma City on Saturday night. First pitch is set for 7 p.m. as either lefthander David Purcey (1-2) or righty Casey Brown (1-1) will take the mound for the Sooners. Lefthander Spencer Grogan (3-3) is expected to start on the mound for the Cowboys.
