OU Men's Tennis Edges Colorado In Boulder

NORMAN, Okla. - OU sophomore Matt Long (Fort Worth, Texas) overcame a 5-2 deficit in the third set of his match at No. 5 singles to defeat Chad Tsuda and give the 75th-ranked Oklahoma men's tennis team their first conference win on the season with a 4-3 victory over Colorado Saturday at the Millennium Hotel in Boulder, Colo. The match originally scheduled at CU's Kittredge Courts was moved indoors due to bad weather. The Sooners improved to 1-6 in conference and finished the regular season at 15-9 overall while the Buffs fell to 1-5 in Big 12 play and 6-14 overall.

Oklahoma claimed two of three in doubles to win the doubles point for the 13th time this spring. OU senior Chris Mitchell (Tulsa, Okla.) and freshman Tommy Garrison (Enid, Okla.) notched their 13th win at No. 1 with an 8-5 victory over CU's Tusuda and Justin Hunter. Sooners Long and Alexei Ivanov (Izhevsk, Russia) downed the Buffs' Maciej Dilaj and Bucky Mink, 8-5, at No. 2. It was the duo's 11th win at the second slot and 17th on the season.

Colorado bounced back with three straight wins at the No. 2, 3 and 4 singles positions. Sooner freshman Ivanov narrowed the deficit to 3-2 with a straight-set win at No. 1 over CU's Dilaj, 6-4, 6-4. That win gave Ivanov his seventh victory on the season at No. 1.

Another freshman stepped up for the Sooners as Garrison won a third-set tie-breaker at No. 6 against Colorado's Jon Magnes, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (8). Long's heroic comeback victory at No. 5 pushed his record to 6-1 this season.

The Sooners begin postseason play next week at the Big 12 Championships in Kansas City, Mo. The tournament begins on Thursday, April 24, and runs through Sunday, April 27, at the Plaza Tennis Center.
