Kansas Downs Oklahoma 11-4 In Series Opener

NORMAN, Okla. - Kansas' 10-run explosion during the middle part of the game proved too much for Oklahoma to overcome in an 11-4 defeat Friday night at L. Dale Mitchell Park. The Sooners recorded four late runs in the final three innings to cut in to the margin, but their effort was not enough in the end. The right side of the Oklahoma infield had a solid offensive outing as senior first baseman Luke Alexander and senior second baseman Eddie Cornejo each had three hit performances. OU dropped to 13-21 overall and 1-12 in the Big 12 Conference with the loss, while KU improved to 30-15 overall and 5-8 in the league.
Down 11-0, Alexander (3-for-4) got the Sooners on the scoreboard in the seventh frame with a lead off home run to record his third round-tripper of the year.
The Sooners then generated a late rally in the bottom of the ninth inning to score three more runs. Freshman third baseman Russell Raley (1-for-1) and Alexander led off the frame with back-to-back singles. After the Jayhawks secured two consecutive outs, junior shortstop Denver Kitch (2-for-5) delivered a RBI double to score Raley. Sophomore pinch hitter Brandon Jones (1-for-1) then ripped a triple to right-center field to clear the bases and bring the game to its final margin.
Kansas took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning courteousy of first baseman Ryan Baty's ninth home run of the season. After holding the Jayhawks silent from the second through the fourth inning, KU exploded for six runs in the fifth frame. Kansas tagged Oklahoma starting pitcher Mark Roberts (4-3) for all the earned runs on five hits. They then plated three more runs in the next inning as designated hitter Kevin Wheeler's inside-the-park home run to center field also drove in the two baserunners ahead of him. Shortstop Brandon Shepard then accounted for KU's final run in the seventh inning with a solo blast to left field off OU reliever Austin Mix.
The two teams square off tomorrow at 2 p.m. at L. Dale Mitchell Park with lefthander Buddy Blair (2-5) throwing for Oklahoma and righthander Chris Smart (1-2) starting for Kansas.
