OU Men's Tennis Defeats Texas-Arlington, 5-2

NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma men's tennis team beat Texas-Arlington, 5-2, Saturday at the OU Headington Family Tennis Center in Norman, Okla. The Sooners improved to 13-9 overall while the Mavericks fell to 10-7 overall.

The Sooners swept the doubles point to take the early lead in the match. Senior Matt Ogle (Tulsa, Okla.) and sophomore Silviu Tanasoiu (Sibiu, Romania) provided OU's first victory on the day with an 8-2 win over UTA's Javier Carrillo and Alon Goldshuv at No. 3. Sooners Matt Long (Fort Worth, Texas) and freshman Alexei Ivanov (Izhevsk, Russia) came back from a 3-6 deficit at No. 2 to win five straight games and beat Niels Buksik and David Corrie, 8-6. OU senior Chris Mitchell (Tulsa, Okla.) and freshman Tommy Garrison (Enid, Okla.) completed the sweep defeating Sandy Farquharson and Nathan McGregor in a tiebreaker (9-7) for a 9-8 victory at No. 1.

Oklahoma got off to a fast start in singles as Long downed Farquharson, 6-2, 6-1, at the fifth slot. Ivanov dominated McGregor, 6-1, 6-2, for his sixth victory of the spring at No. 1. With the match still in doubt, OU's Mitchell secured the Sooner victory with a 6-2, 7-5 win over David Corrie. It was his eighth win at No. 2 and 13th of the spring.

Garrison tacked on another point for Oklahoma at No. 6 with a 6-4, 2-6, 7-5 triumph over Ian Vazquez while OU's Tanasoiu was narrowly missed posting his 10th win of the spring as he was edged by Carrillo in a third-set tiebreaker (8-6).

The Sooners return to action tomorrow (April 13) for their final home match of the season against regional foe Saint Louis. Match time is scheduled for 11 a.m. at the OU Headington Family Tennis Center. The Billikens are 8-11 on the season and 2-5 in Conference USA. OU is 4-3 against Region V opponents.
