OU Men's Tennis Topples No. 71 Michigan State, 5-2

NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma men's tennis team upset No. 71 Michigan State, 5-2, Saturday at the OU Headington Family Tennis Center. The Sooners move to 10-2 overall while the Spartans fall to 9-5 on the season.

MSU took the early lead in the match winning the No. 1 and 2 positions in doubles to clinch the doubles point. OU's Chris Mitchell (Tulsa, Okla.) and Tommy Garrison (Enid, Okla.) dropped their first match of the season at No. 1 doubles to Eric Simonton and Cameron Marshall, 9-7. The duo is 5-1 at No. 1 doubles this spring. Sooners Alexei Ivanov (Izhevsk, Russia) and sophomore Matt Long (Fort Worth, Texas) picked up a victory at No. 3 doubles with an 8-5 win over MSU's Chris Mitchell and Andrew Formanczyk.

The Sooners came back strong in singles winning all but one match. Ivanov came back after dropping the first set to defeat Formanczyk, 2-6, 6-1, 6-3. OU's Mitchell defeated MSU's Mitchell at No. 2 singles, 6-3, 6-1, while senior Matt Ogle (Tulsa, Okla.) won in straight sets over Marshall, 7-5, 6-3.

Garrison fell in straight sets at No. 4 singles but OU sophomores Silviu Tanasoiu (Sibiu, Romania) and Alex Nomicos (Targoviste, Romania) won their matches at the No. 5 and 6 positions, respectively. Nomicos pulled out a three-set thriller against Adam Hourani, 6-7, 6-4, 1-0 (10-8) while Tanasoiu beat MSU's Simonton in straight sets, 6-0, 6-4.

The Sooners continue their season next week against Cameron on Tuesday, March 11. Match time is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. at the OU Headington Family Tennis Center in Norman.
