Sooner Men's Tennis Falls To No. 17 Texas

NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma men's tennis team fell to 17th-ranked Texas, 7-0, Sunday at the OU Headington Family Tennis Center in Norman, Okla. The Sooners dropped to 12-7 overall and 0-4 versus Big 12 opponents while the Longhorns improved to 10-4 overall and 3-0 in conference.

UT came out strong in doubles taking all three matches to go up 1-0 in the match. Sooners Matt Long (Fort Worth, Texas) and Alexei Ivanov (Izhevsk, Russia) put up a great fight against UT"s Jimmy Haney and Peter Stoer but eventually fell in a tie-breaker, 9-8. The Longhorns downed the Sooners, 8-4 at No. 1 and 8-3 at No. 3 to complete the sweep.

OU's Ivanov beat UT's 53rd-ranked Jean Simon in the first set but dropped the last two and was defeated, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4, at No. 1. Sooner sophomore Alex Nomicos (Targoviste, Romania) pushed his match with UT's Roger Gubser to a third set at No. 5 but fell, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2. The Longhorns posted straight-set wins at the other four singles positions.

The Sooners will be looking to halt their three-match losing streak against conference foe Nebraska on Saturday, April 5. The Cornhuskers are winless in conference at 0-3 and sport an overall record of 8-6. Play is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. at the Woods Tennis Center.
