OU Men's Tennis Shocked By Wichita State, 6-1

NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma men's tennis team fell to Wichita State, 6-1, Wednesday at the Sheldon Coleman Tennis Complex in Wichita, Kan. The Sooners dropped to 12-5 overall and 4-1 against regional opponents while the Shockers improved to 5-6.

The Sooners got off to a great start shutting out the Shockers in doubles to take an early lead, 1-0. OU senior Chris Mitchell (Tulsa, Okla.) and freshman Tommy Garrison (Enid, Okla.) posted their ninth win of the season at No. 1 doubles with an 8-6 victory over WSU's Carlo Contente and Leo Ramirez.

Sooners Matt Long (Fort Worth, Texas) and Alexei Ivanov (Izhevsk, Russia) crushed Shockers Joggan Austin and Marko Despot, 8-1 at No. 2 while OU senior Matt Ogle (Tulsa, Okla.) and sophomore Brad Prigmore (Wichita Falls, Texas) completed the sweep at No. 3 with an 9-7 victory over Angelo Manns and Jaime Rodriguez.

The Shockers came out of nowhere in singles to take all six matches. Ogle put up a good fight but was ousted at No. 4 by Austin, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4. At No. 1 and 3 respectively, OU's Ivanov and sophomore Silviu Tansoiu (Sibiu, Romania) each fell behind a set and lost their second set in a tie-breaker. OU's Mitchell and sophomore Alex Nomicos (Targoviste, Romania) lost their first sets in close tie-breakers at the No. 2 and 5 positions, respectively, and were defeated in the second set.

The Sooners return home this weekend for a pair of matches against conference foes at the OU Headington Family Tennis Center. OU plays host to No. 10 Texas A&M on Saturday, March 29, at Noon. The Aggies (16-5, 1-0) are coming off a 4-3 win over No. 24 Rice. Oklahoma is back in action against No. 17 Texas (8-4, 1-0) on Sunday, March 30. That match is also scheduled to begin at Noon.
