No. 27 Oklahoma Drops Second Game To No. 8 Baylor, 4-3

WACO, Texas - The 27th-ranked Oklahoma baseball team scored a run in the top of the ninth inning but eighth-ranked Baylor squelched any further threat to hang on for a 4-3 win over the Sooners Saturday afternoon at Baylor Ballpark. OU clung to a 2-1 lead entering the bottom of the seventh inning when Baylor plated three runs with two outs to score the necessary runs for victory. OU starting pitcher Buddy Blair (2-3) was responsible for all four runs as the Sooners fell to 11-8 overall with their fifth straight loss and 0-2 in the Big 12 Conference. The Bears improved to 20-6 overall and 4-1 in the league.
Down to their final out in the game, Sooner senior second baseman Eddie Cornejo (3-for-4), the team's leading hitter in the contest, drew a walk to keep the inning alive. After moving to second base uncontested on a catcher's indifference, Cornejo advanced home on a RBI-single by junior third baseman Jay Yaconetti (1-for-4). However, winning pitcher Zane Carlson (1-2) closed out the game by striking out sophomore first baseman Matt Bose (0-for-4).
Blair and Baylor start Trey Taylor engaged in a scoreless pitcher's duel through the first four frames until the Bears broke through with a run in the fifth inning. Baylor shortstop Trey Webb lined a sharp single that deflected off of Blair for only the third base hit off the junior lefthander. Second baseman Mark Saccomanno followed with a double to move Webb to third before Webb scored the first run of the game on third baseman Paul Witt's RBI-single for the 1-0 Baylor lead.
The Sooners finally got to Taylor in the next half inning when they tagged him for two runs in the top of the sixth to take the lead in the game, 2-1. A single and two walks loaded the bases for Bose who drove in the first run with a groundout to third base. In the next at bat, a fielder's choice, which froze the runners at second and third base, placed freshman second baseman Russell Raley (0-for-3) at first base to load the bases for the second time in the inning. A walk to junior catcher Spencer Wyman (0-for-3) two batters later forced in the second score.
The 2-1 advantage lasted only until the bottom of the seventh inning when Blair gave up two straight hits and intentionally walked a batter to load the bases and create a force at all four bases for the potential third out. However, Blair's second walk of the game pushed home the tying run and ended his outing. Sophomore righthander Jarod McAuliff surrendered a damaging two-RBI base hit on the first batter he faced in relief of Blair to cap off the Bear's scoring.
Despite suffering his third loss of the season, Blair pitched masterfully through the first six frames. He finished the game with seven hits, with only two coming in the first four innings, and four strikeouts.
The series concludes tomorrow at 1 p.m. at Baylor Ballpark with OU junior righthander Mike Swindell (2-0) making his debut in the weekend rotation. Sophomore righthander Sean Walker (3-1) is expected to take the mound for the Bears.
