OU Women's Tennis Drops Match Against No. 17 UNLV

NORMAN, Okla. - The 44th-ranked Oklahoma women's tennis team dropped their first match of the season in a hard-fought contest against No. 17 UNLV in the final round of the UNLV Women's Tennis Spring Invitational. The match was held Sunday at the Fertitta Tennis Complex in Las Vegas, Nev. The Lady Rebels won four points in singles to claim the tournament title, 4-2. OU drops to 8-1 on the season while the Lady Rebels improve to 7-1.

The Sooners continued their excellent play at doubles winning two out of three to take the first point of the afternoon. At No. 2 doubles, OU's Annette Bryntesson (Perth, Australia) and Bethany Griffin (Amarillo, Texas) beat UNLV's Tracie Chong and Cindy Treber, 8-2. Sooner sophomore Jessica Braver (Edmond, Okla.) and senior Melissa Mendieta (San Jose, Costa Rica) were 8-6 winners over Gyorgyi Zsiros and Amy Hadziosmanovic.

In singles, Sooner junior Anda Perianu (Braila, Romania) earned OU's second point of the afternoon with a 2-6, 6-1, 6-4, victory over UNLV's Paulina Janus at the No. 1 singles position to push her record to 7-1 at No. 1 singles. Perianu is currently ranked 74th by the ITA.

Bryntesson was dominant in the second set of her match but fell to UNLV's Agnieszka Abram in three sets, 6-2, 1-6, 6-3. OU sophomore Heather Saluri (Des Moines, Iowa) also pushed her match to a third set before falling to Chong, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4

The Sooners return home next Saturday (March 8) to begin conference play against No. 59 Kansas State. The match is scheduled to start at noon at the OU Headington Family Tennis Center in Norman.
