NORMAN, Okla. - Oklahoma junior third baseman Jay Yaconetti was named the Big 12 Conference Player of the Week, as announced by the league office Tuesday afternoon, for his recent standout offensive show during the Sooners' four-game stretch last week. For the week, Yaconetti hit at a .562 (9-for-16) clip with nine runs scored and nine RBI, including two home runs. He recorded and tied several career highs during the span for runs scored, hits and RBI. The team's offensive leader for the week, Yaconetti registered at least one run scored and one RBI in all four contests while leading the Sooners to a win over TCU and two wins over Michigan.
"Jay was our biggest contributor offensively last week and was certainly instrumental in our wins over TCU and Michigan," commented OU head coach Larry Cochell. "He is quickly turning out to be one of the offensive leaders on our team this season."
The Gilbert, Ariz., native began the week with the first of three straight three hit performances in OU's 13-6 win over TCU on Tuesday. Two of his career high three hits went for extra bases as he connected on a pair of doubles. He also scored a career best three runs and drove in two more.
His performance on Friday closely mirrored the TCU game as he again collected three hits and three runs scored and established a new career best in RBI with three. He hit the first of two home runs on the weekend in the Michigan series opener and followed the next day with his second shot. It marked the third time this season that Yaconetti had gone deep in back-to-back games.
In OU's 5-4 series clinching victory over the Wolverines on Sunday, Yaconetti knocked in the game-winning run in the sixth inning to cap off a successful series. Over the three games against Michigan alone, the Central Arizona Junior College transfer batted .500 (6-for-12) with six runs scored and seven RBI.
Yaconetti will help lead the Sooners against the Southern Illinois Salukis in the second game of a two-game set tomorrow at 3 p.m. at L. Dale Mitchell Park.
