Cardinals Down Sooners, 7-4, In Lamar Tournament

BEAUMONT, Texas - Lamar scored four runs in the seventh frame to overcome a 4-3 deficit and defeat Oklahoma, 7-4, in the final game of the Lamar Tournament of Champions at Vincent-Beck Stadium Sunday afternoon. The Cardinals rallied on the strength of five hits. Charlie House (0-1) absorbed the loss.
OU used the long ball to plate three of their runs in the contest, including two solo shots by junior catcher Spencer Wyman. The loss was the Sooners' first of the tournament as they fall to 5-2 on the year. Lamar improves to 10-3 with the win.
Lamar tagged OU starter David Purcey for three runs in the first three frames. A leadoff single and stolen base by second baseman Blake Justice (2-for-5) led to a run in the first inning due to a two-base error by Sooner third baseman Jay Yaconetti (0-for-4). Justice inflicted further damage in the second inning when he singled in third baseman Ryan Finan (2-for-3) who had walked earlier in the frame. The third run was scored in the third inning when a wild pitch moved center fielder Shaun Stanton (1-for-3), who had led off the inning with a double, to third base and allowed left fielder Jordan Foster (2-for-3) to lift a sacrifice to right field and plate Stanton.
The Sooners scored their first two runs of the game on solo homers by senior first baseman Luke Alexander (1-for-4) and Wyman (2-for-4). Alexander hit his second home run of the season, a solo shot, to right field to knot the game up at 1-1 in the second frame, while Wyman went deep for the first time in the game in the fifth inning. Wyman's second shot, in the seventh inning, briefly put the Sooners ahead 4-3.
Senior second baseman Eddie Cornejo's (2-for-4) single to right field to send senior center fielder Reggie Willits (1-for-4) home from second base tied the game at 3-3 in the fifth frame. Willits placed himself in scoring position after beating out a bunt single and swiping his sixth base of the year.
After giving up three runs through the first three frames, Purcey kept the Cardinals off the scoreboard during his final three innings of work. He relinquished only six hits and two earned runs, while issuing four walks and striking out three. Purcey used his deceptive pick off move to erase three runners at first base.
Oklahoma returns home to face TCU Tuesday at 3 p.m. at L. Dale Mitchell Park before hosting the University of Michigan for a three-game set over the weekend.
