NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma men's tennis team shut out Cowley County Community College, 7-0, Friday afternoon at the Oak Tree Country Club in Edmond, Okla. OU moves to 8-1 overall while winning their fifth match in a row.
In singles, the Sooners were perfect winning each match in straight sets. Senior Chris Mitchell (Tulsa, Okla.) pushed his record at No. 1 singles to 4-0 with a 6-3, 6-1, victory over Ignacio Melus while freshman Alexei Ivanov (Izhevsk, Russia) moved to 4-0 at No. 2 singles with a straight-set win over Jeff Stone.
OU won all three doubles matches to take the doubles point. Ivanov and sophomore Matt Long (Fort Worth, Texas) picked up their first win at No. 1 doubles with a 9-8 decision over Melus and Dean Clower.
The Sooners return to the court Saturday, March 1, to begin conference play against No. 54 Texas Tech. Match time is scheduled for 11 a.m. at the McLeod Tennis Center in Lubbock, Texas.
