NORMAN, Okla. The University of Oklahoma men's gymnastics team and head coach Mark Williams added another talented recruit for the 2005 season with a letter of intent signed today by Joseph Weaver. Weaver joins the incoming class for next season which also includes Taqiy Abdullah and Jonathan Horton, who signed last week.
Weaver is coached by Ron Brant at the United States Olympic Training Center. Brant is the Senior National Team Coordinator and has produced numerous elite gymnasts. Weaver was also taught under the expertise of former gold and silver medalist, Valeri Liukin. Liukin won those medals competing for the Soviet Union during the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul, Korea and currently is teaching at the World Olympic Gymnastics Academy.
“Joseph has a lot of potential and is capable of contributing in all six events for us next season,” said Oklahoma head coach Mark Williams. “He was coached by some of the very best USA Gymnastics has to offer with Ron Brant and in addition was fortunate enough to be coached by Valeri Liukin. This may be the best class I have recruited in my tenure here at OU. And only time will tell if these three guys can equal up to what last year's seniors (Daniel Furney, Josh Landis and Shannon Carrion) accomplished in their OU careers.”
In 2003, Weaver was the 16th all-around U.S. Championships qualifier in Class 1 after placing 13th and 6th in the all-around in Class 2 in 2001. He is a five time state champion (1996-2000) and a two time Class 3 National team member (1999-2000). Weaver has also placed in the Junior Nationals, taking first in the parallel bars, third in the all-around and third in the pommel horse.
Weaver is the son of Donna Weaver and maintains a 4.0 grade point average at William J. Palmer High School in Colorado Springs, Colo.
