Nearly 100 former University of Oklahoma baseball players will return to campus this weekend to participate in alumni festivities put on by the program which will conclude with a contest against the current Sooner squad on Sunday. Players from decades as far back as the 1940s to recently departed members of the 2003 squad will reunite this weekend for an exclusive golf outing on Saturday and the alumni contest.
The game, which is free to the public, will begin at 12:15 p.m. on Sunday at L. Dale Mitchell Park with a home run hitting contest followed by the alumni game with a 1 p.m. first pitch start time. The contest will pit selected alumni players against the current Sooner squad for a full nine innings. Concessions will be available for purchase by the fans and autographs are invited by both current and former players.
Notable attendees include members of both 1951 and 1994 national championship squads and a host for former All-Americans and Sooner standouts and former head coach Enos Semore. Included among some of the former standouts will be current Atlanta Braves broadcaster and former All-American Joe Simpson (1971-73); school home run record holder and All-American Casey Bookout (1996-99); school single-season hits, RBI and runs scored record holder and All-American Kevin Burdick (1986-87); Casey Mendenhall (1990-92), who appears in the top 10 of five OU pitching record charts; 1994 national championship team member and current player in the Philadelphia Phillies system, Damon Minor (1993-96); Charlie Pugsley (1943-51), who was responsible for driving home the winning run in the 1951 national championship game; and All-American and three-time all-conference honoree Bill Severns (1972-75).
Notes To Know About This Weekend's Event:
Resurrected after a 10 year absence, the event will once again become an annual occurance.
The group of alumni include 31 all-conference selections, including nine All-American picks.
Forty-four players that continued to play baseball professionally following their collegiate careers will be included in the group.
Sixty players from the Enos Semore coaching era (1968-89), 20 indiviudals who played during current head coach Larry Cochell's era (1991-present) and nine players from head coach Jack Baer's tenure (1942-67) will be present.
Alumni from as far away as California will return for the weekend.
