NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma men's and women's tennis teams begin their respective 2003 seasons on Friday, Jan. 31. The women will be in action all day against Oral Roberts, Southern Nazarene and Oklahoma Baptist. The first match against ORU is scheduled for 12 p.m. at the Woodlake Racquet Club, located at 6901 NW 63rd St. in Oklahoma City. The men's team will compete against Oklahoma Baptist at 2 p.m. at the Oaktree Country Club, located at 700 W. Country Club Drive in Edmond.
The women's team has a wealth of experience, returning all but one of its players from a team that went 16-8 overall and 5-6 in conference a year ago. It was a 10-win improvement from the 2001 squad's mark of 6-13. It also marked the 10th time in Head Coach Mark Johnson's 14 years at OU that the Sooners won at least 16 matches.
Last year, the men's team finished with an overall record of 12-12 and 0-8 in the Big 12. Head Coach Paul Lockwood is in his 16th year at the helm of the program and has brought back six players from last year's team and has added two newcomers to this year's roster including sophomore transfer Silviu Tanasoiu and freshman Tommy Garrison.
