NORMAN, Okla. - The Oklahoma volleyball team battled host Tulsa all the way, but couldn't sustain any momentum in the fourth and deciding game, losing to the Golden Hurricane in the championship match of the Ewing Grover Olds/GMC Invitaitional. Tulsa won 30-28, 30-27, 28-30, 30-18 to improve to 11-1, while OU drops to 2-6. Senior Megan O'Connell and freshman Jennifer Adams made the EGOGI All-Tournament Team.
"We played really well tonight, the breaks just didn't go our way," said OU Head Coach Kalani Mahi. "I am very proud of my team and the way they battled. Tulsa was the best defensive team we've seen this season, which created a really entertaining game with a lot of lengthy rallies. We just ran out of gas in the fourth game and couldn't come back when they took a substanial lead."
O'Connell had 15 kills and 17 digs, both OU career-highs. Adams put away six kills, to go along with a career-high five block assists. Senior libero Denise Griffin had 17 digs, another career-high. Fellow seniors Jessica Barney and Lindsay Hoyt had 13 and 12 digs, respectively. Junior Christina Barlow had a season-high 13 kills.
"I am in no way dissapointed in the way we played tonight," said Mahi. "I am especially proud of the way we closed out game three, after being down 20."
The loss marks the first ever defeat for OU against Tulsa. The all time record now stands at 30-1.
