NORMAN, Okla. -- Four University of Oklahoma men's gymnasts have qualified
to compete at the 2002 U.S. Gymnastics Championships in Cleveland, Ohio on August
7-9.
Senior Josh Landis (Norman, Okla.), sophomores Josh Gore (Austin, Texas) and David
Henderson (Crosby, Texas) and assistant coach Guard Young (Norman, Okla.) will
compete with 32 other gymnasts for spots on the 2002 U.S. National Team and World
Championship Team.
The competition will name the 2002-2003 Senior and Junior National Teams who will
represent the U.S. in international competition throughout the year. The Championships
also serve as a qualifier to the 2002 Individual World Championships, which are
November 20-24, in Debrecen, Hungary.
Sooner assistant coach Guard Young, currently ranked fifth in the nation, was
a former member of the 2001 U.S. World Championship team which captured a silver
medal last year in Belgium. It marked the Americans' best finish ever in international
competition.
In addition to the competition in Cleveland, Young was recently selected
by USA Gymnastics to compete August 20 in Beijing, China against the Chinese National
Team. China is the current Olympic champions.
