ARLINGTON, Texas - Oklahoma fell to top-seeded Texas 2-1 at the Phillips 66 Big 12 Tournament on Saturday at The Ballpark in Arlington. Texas took a 2-0 lead in the third inning with two unearned runs and OU's Luke Alexander homered in the eighth to bring the Sooners within one, however Oklahoma couldn't come back against Texas' excellent pitching. Oklahoma and Texas will now battle on Saturday night at 7 p.m. for the right to face Nebraska in the Big 12 championship game, which will be held on Sunday at 1 p.m.

"This was a great game if you love college baseball," said Oklahoma head coach. "It was extremely well-pitched on both sides. I thought Rocky (Cherry) pitched very well in his first time back in two months and Evan (Greusel) had another excellent outing. We're now in a position where we need to respond. Texas is the best team we've faced all season long and they are a legitimate threat to win the national title. We have pitchers available for tonight's game and we need to come out ready to play."

Rocky Cherry (3-2) made his fist start since March 15, a 6-3 Oklahoma win at Arizona State. The righty from nearby Coppell, Texas, had been battling elbow tendinitis in his right elbow, and threw 45 pitches in three innings, surrendering two unearned runs on three hits, while striking out one and walking three. Evan Greusel pitched effectively in relief of Cherry, going five frames, allowing just four hits and striking out six. Eddie Cornejo went 2-for-4, extending his season-long hitting streak to 15 games.

Ray Clark (4-4) got the win for the Longhorns, going eight innings and giving up one run on five hits, while fanning 10. UT's Brantley Jordan earned his second save by striking out the side in the ninth and both Tim Moss and Omar Quintanilla notched two hits for the 'Horns.

After neither team scored in the first two-and-a-half innings, Texas broke through in the third with two unearned runs to take a 2-0 lead. In the inning, UT loaded the bases with no outs, but UT's J.D. Reininger grounded into a double play and Cherry got out of the jam with as little damage as possible. Greusel came into the game in the fourth inning and proceeded to strike out the first three batters he faced.

With two outs in the sixth inning, Cornejo ripped a double off the wall in left field. Jason Fransz then roped a single to left field and after rounding third base, Cornejo was called out on a controversial play at the plate on a throw by UT's Brandon Fahey.

In the top of the eighth, Luke Alexander drilled a solo home run to left on the first pitch by Ray Clark to make the score 2-1, Texas. The homer was Alexander's seventh of his season, but UT reliever Jordan struck out the side in the ninth to seal the Texas win.

Oklahoma and Texas will battle again tonight at 7 p.m. for the right to play Nebraska in Sunday's Big 12 championship game, which will be played Sunday at 1 p.m.
