LAWRENCE, Kan. - The Oklahoma baseball team earned a hard-fought, 6-3 win over Kansas on Sunday at a chilly Hoglund Ballpark to take the series from the Jayhawks, two games to one. The Sooners trailed for most of the game, but took the lead for good with two runs in the seventh inning. After OU added another two runs in the ninth, freshman Jarod McAuliff shut the door on any KU comeback to notch his second save. Austin Mix (6-5) pitched 6.2 innings and allowed three unearned runs on five hits en route to the win, while striking out four and walking four. Oklahoma (31-21, 13-11 Big 12) had 11 hits in the game, but committed five errors and stranded seven men on base.
Jason Fransz went 3-for-5 with two runs batted in and both Eddie Cornejo and Denver Kitch had two hits in the ballgame. Tyson Bothof (0-2) took the loss for Kansas.
The Sooners committed two errors in the field in the second inning, allowing Kansas to get on the board first with three unearned runs. Oklahoma came back to score a run in the top of the third, when Matt Bose reached home on a throwing error by KU catcher Cole Armstrong. OU loaded the bases in the inning, but Kansas hurler Chris Jones got Jason Fransz to ground into an inning-ending double play.
OU pulled within 3-2 with another run in the fourth, which came when Matt Bose singled to left and KU LF Ryan Baty let the ball get past him. Greg Kish, who had reached base on a single, scored from first on the play.
Kansas loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth inning, facilitated by two more Oklahoma errors, however Mix got out of the inning unscathed. Oklahoma then manufactured two runs in the top of the seventh frame to take a 4-3 lead. Fransz singled to score Reggie Willits and then Ryan Richardson doubled into the right field corner to bring Fransz home.
The Sooners added two insurance runs in the ninth to make it 6-3, OU. Eddie Cornejo ripped an RBI double to left center field and Fransz brought Cornejo home with an infield single.
Oklahoma now travels to Wichita, Kan., to battle the No. 10 Wichita State Shockers on Monday at 7 p.m. The game had been scheduled as a tentative make-up game and since both teams can play an extra game under the NCAA's 56-game rule, the contest will take place. Oklahoma will then battle cross-state rival Oklahoma State Thursday night in Tulsa's Driller Stadium and on Friday and Saturday at SBC Bricktown Ballpark in Oklahoma City.
