Thanks to 14 hits and three home runs, Oklahoma avenged its Thursday loss to Kansas with a convincing 10-0 run-rule victory today. Leah Gulla, Heather Scaglione and Jessica Leslie all dialed deep to bounce the Jayhawks from the tournament. The win sets up a matchup of the tournament's top two seeds tonight at 7:30 as the Sooners will take on No. 1 seed Texas.
Kelli Braitsch, who like Scaglione collected three hits, scored the first run of the game in the first inning on a Gulla single. OU posted three more runs in the third on a Jennifer Stump RBI single and a Scaglione two-run homer. The Sooners iced the game in the fourth when they plated six more runs before the Jayhawks recorded an out. Highlighting the inning was a run-scoring triple by Braitsch and a pair of two-run shots by Leslie and Gulla.
The Sooners' 10 runs were their second most in Big 12 Tournament play (they scored 11 in a game in the 2000 event). Freshman pitcher Kami Keiter gave up three hits in four innings to improve to 12-6 while Jennifer Stewart pitched the fifth frame.
KU starter Kirsten Milhoan took the loss to fall to 6-7. Milhoan gave up four runs, all earned, on four hits in 3.0 innings of work before yielding to Serena Settlemier, who was tagged for six runs on five hits.
Oklahoma Head Coach Patty Gasso
On OU's hitting:
"It's really nice to see Kelly (Braitsch) swinging the bat well and Jessica Leslie hit the ball further than almost anybody this season. What you saw today is potentially what this team can bring. The mystery of it all is how to bring it out consistently every game."
On facing top-seeded Texas tonight:
"They have outstanding pitching and they find ways to score runs so we're excited to get a chance to see them again. We're just going to go for it. I don't know which pitcher we're going to go against. I would imagine (Cat) Osterman. We're just going to have to stay disciplined, swing at pitches in the strike zone and try to generate some offense."
Kansas Head Coach Tracy Bunge
On the game:
"I give a lot of credit to Oklahoma. They really came to play. They made some good adjustments and took advantage of us today. We were a little flat and not very energetic."
On the Big 12 Tournament:
"I am pleased with our performance except for one inning in the previous three games. I thought we played
extremely well and represented the University of Kansas very well. We played to the best of our ability."
