NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma baseball team, currently 16-7 and ranked No. 17 by Collegiate Baseball and No. 23 by Baseball Weekly/ESPN, is set to battle Alabama (21-3) Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. at SBC Bricktown Ballpark in Oklahoma City. The game will be the first of four scheduled games at Bricktown for Oklahoma this season. OU takes on Arizona State on April 24, and Oklahoma State on May 17-18.
"We're looking forward to tomorrow's game because playing at Bricktown is always a treat for our players and we're hoping to have a very big crowd," said Oklahoma head coach Larry Cochell. "Alabama is an excellent team from a great baseball conference, but we feel confident heading into this game. We played really well at Arizona State two weekends ago and I think we grew up quite a bit against Texas A&M. This should be a great measuring stick for us and we're excited about it."
The Sooners are coming off a tough series at Texas A&M in which the Aggies won two out of three, but with a 4-2 record in Big 12 play, OU is in a three-way tie for first place in the rugged conference. Alabama is ranked as high as No. 5 by Collegiate Baseball and is off to the best start in its storied history.
Austin Mix will man the hill for Oklahoma, looking for his fifth win of the season. The junior from Coppell, Texas, has already surpassed his win total from a year ago and is looking more and more like the player who garnered Freshman All-America honors in 2000. He is 4-1 with a 3.51 ERA and 27 strikeouts, and his opponents are batting just .214 against him, the seventh-lowest in the Big 12 Conference. Mix's ERA is good for 16th in the Big 12, a league known for excellent pitching.
Freshman left-hander Brent Carter will be taking the mound for the Crimson Tide. He currently boasts a 1-0 record with a 1.56 ERA and has struck out 17 batters in 17.1 innings pitched, while allowing just four runs.
Oklahoma continues its tough stretch of games this weekend as No. 13 Baylor visits L. Dale Mitchell Park for a three-game set. Game times are set for 6:30 p.m. on Friday, 2 p.m. on Saturday and 1 p.m. on Sunday.
