Furney Fares Well At First U.S. National Gymnastics Meet

NORMAN, Okla. - In his first meet as a member of the U.S. senior national gymnastics team, Oklahoma junior Daniel Furney placed third in the all-around on Friday, March 15, in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, as Team USA won the event, 164.675 to 161.250.

Furney's 53.980 in the all-around was third to two other team members (Todd Thornton and Cody Moore). Furney's best performance was a 9.300 on the vault. He also notched a 9.050 on the pommel horse and a 9.000 on the rings.

"He was extremely proud to represent the U.S in international competition," said OU head coach Mark Williams, who was one of the coaches at the event. "It was a great experience for Daniel to compete for the U.S., and this only helps him prepare for the World Championships and Olympic Games."

On Saturday, March 16, Team USA competed in individual competition against gymnasts from around the world. Furney tied for fourth place on the rings (8.967) and finished seventh on the pommel horse (8.200).

The third-ranked Sooners will be back in action on Friday and Saturday, March 22-23, at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships in Colorado Springs, Colo.
