Furney To Compete In First U.S. National Gymnastics Meet

NORMAN, Okla. - Oklahoma men's gymnast, Daniel Furney, who claimed a spot on the U.S. National Gymnastics team on Feb. 8 at the Winter Cup Challenge in Las Vegas, Nev., will take part in his first international meet, the Jurassic Classic, on March 15-16 in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

The meet is an international competition between the U.S. and Canada and will be held on the campus of the University of Calgary. The team and all-around events will be on Friday followed by the finals on Saturday. There will be five gymnasts representing the U.S., and Oklahoma head coach Mark Williams will be one of three coaches.

"This is something Daniel Furney has been working toward since he came to Oklahoma," said Williams. "He has always had visions of representing the U.S., and being on the national team will allow him to fulfull his dreams. After overcoming several injuries, this is really an amazing story. Hopefully he'll perform well in Calgary and use his experiences to help OU go forward."

The third-ranked Sooners have completed their regular season and will compete at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships on March 23-24 in Colorado Springs, Colo. Oklahoma will also host the 2002 NCAA Men's Gymnastics national championships on April 4-6 at the Lloyd Noble Center. The top 12 teams in the nation will be vying for the national title.
