NORMAN, Okla. - The Oklahoma Sooners improved to 2-0 on the young season with a 16-6 victory over Arkansas-Little Rock (3-2). OU opened up a 10-0 lead after the second inning and cruised to the win behind the pitching of sophomore Buddy Blair and the bats of Charlie Frasier, Jason Fransz, Chris Jakubauskas and Denver Kitch, each of whom hit home runs.
"We played an excellent ballgame today," said OU head coach Larry Cochell. "We got off to a fast start and I think we're developing some depth by being able to play a lot of guys. That keeps everyone on their toes and can only help us down the road. I think Buddy (Blair) did a nice job starting for us and hopefully he starts to trust his pitches. He didn't give up any runs and put us in a great position to win."
Blair (1-0) picked up the win after pitching four shutout innings and giving up just three hits. The sophomore from Jenks, Okla., started just four games a year ago and was 0-2 with a 5.40 ERA in 33.1 innings pitched. He received great run support today as the Sooners built a quick 10-0 lead while he was holding the Trojans scoreless.
In the first inning, Luke Alexander drove in a run, Chris Jakubauskas tripled and brought in three runs and Spencer Wyman hit a sacrifice fly, bringing Jakubauskas home. In the second inning, Reggie Willits scored after leading off with a double and then Charlie Frasier hit his second home run of the season, a towering shot which brought home two runs. Jason Fransz doubled and Jakubauskas then added to his RBI total, homering to right center field.
Frasier was 2-for-2 today with three runs scored and three driven in. On the season, he is batting 1.000 (5-for-5) with two HR and eight RBI. To date, Frasier's slugging percentage is an incredible 2.200. Willits went 3-for-4 in today's contest and Fransz was 3-for-4 with a HR, three RBI and three runs scored. Kitch was 3-for-5 with a HR and an RBI and Eddie Cornejo continued his hot start, connecting on both of his at bats. He is batting .714 on the short season.
"Chris (Jakubauskas), Jason (Fransz) and Charlie (Frasier) are really off to good starts," said Cochell. "We have a lot of power on this team and we showed that today. They all did a nice job."
Curtis White performed admirably in his first appearance as a Sooner, pitching three innings and giving up two runs on just four hits. He struck out three and should be a factor for OU out of the bullpen this season. Kyle Bebout also made his OU debut, pitching an inning and a third and giving up just one hit.
Oklahoma will try to complete the series sweep against Arkansas-Little Rock on Sunday at 1 p.m. at L. Dale Mitchell Park.
