OKLAHOMA vs. KANSAS STATE
Feb. 16, 2002
Lloyd Noble Center - Norman, Okla.
Oklahoma Head Coach Kelvin Sampson
On the game:
"I want to congratulate Kansas State and Coach Wooldridge for the job that they did. They came in here with a great game plan and executed it to slow us down. We kept our patience and I wasn't as disappointed with our team at all. We just had to get some good stops and we started trapping and getting some points off of turnovers. I thought in the second half we did a much better job of attacking and getting the ball inside to Aaron McGhee who had a tremendous game."
On Kansas State's zone defense:
"If a team tries to play us man-to-man, then we're going to run up and down the court with them and they're going to have to counter that so I wasn't surprised to see them play zone on our team."
On OU forward Jozsef Szendrei:
"He's a tough player who plays with a lot of emotion. We're trying to integrate him into our team as much as we can because it can only help us in the end."
On keeping OU focused
"Our biggest enemy over the past month has been our ability to concentrate. We've had mental lapses in the past few games and we've lost some leads because of it. Physically we're fine but our coaching staff has been working really hard on keeping our team focused. We stayed focused today and hopefully this win will get us going in the right direction."
Oklahoma Senior Aaron McGhee
On the game:
"They had a pretty physical offense to guard against. And in the first half we didn't come out with a lot of intensity. But in the second half, we came out with a lot more fire and we started playing better.
On his performance:
"I'm a rhythm player and I got my rhythm going in the second half. Shots were falling for me and I was able to maintain that rhythm."
Oklahoma Junior Jason Detrick
On the game:
"We just had to bounce back from the OSU loss. We just had to find our defensive attitude and that's what we stressed the last couple of days in practice. We just had to get our defensive attitude back."
On his first start in several games:
"Coach just gave me an opportunity and any time you get a chance like that, you just have to go out an make the best of it. You don't want to go out there and take it for granted. So I just wanted to go out there and show what I could do."
On his performance:
"I just tried to go out there and play hard. My teammates found me open shots and I was just trying to knock them down."
Kansas State Head Coach Jim Wooldridge
On the game:
"We couldn't put a full 40 minutes together today. They are a very quick team and they exploited that today. At times we played really well and at times we couldn't hit anything. We really played in spurts and that hurt us."
On Oklahoma's Defense:
"They played a lot of zone. That made it very hard for Larry Reid to penetrate. They are so quick and very deep that we just couldn't hang with them. They asserted themselves really well on the boards and that was a big difference."
On senior forward Aaron McGhee:
"Aaron McGhee is a load, he is very physical inside. Right now he is playing at a level that is hard to stop."
On junior guard Jason Detrick:
"He gave them a spark in the first half. He is a scorer and that's what he did today."
