NORMAN, Okla. - The Oklahoma baseball team is now 2-1 after dropping its first game of the season today, 4-2 to Arkansas-Little Rock in a windy and cold L. Dale Mitchell Park. Scott Sharpe (1-0) got the win for the Trojans, while Rocky Cherry took the loss in his first action of the season. Sophomore Mark Roberts pitched extremely well in relief of Cherry, throwing 3.2 innings of one-hit, scoreless ball and striking out seven.
OU took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, however the Trojans put together a rally in the second which gave them the lead for good. Designated hitter Derek Santangelo and first baseman Brodie Ward each singled for UALR and second baseman Santino Dewreede drove them in with a single to center field. UALR added two runs in the sixth inning as Santangelo and Ward each drove in runs.
Oklahoma put together rallies in both the seventh and eighth innings, loading the bases in the eighth, however UALR relievers Tucker O'Neal and Brad Cherry got the Trojans out of those two jams unscathed. In all, Oklahoma left 11 runners on base and failed to produce the offensive firepower they enjoyed in Friday's 10-4 win and Saturday's 16-6 victory.
"We certainly had opportunities to get back in the ball game and we didn't cash in on them," said Oklahoma head coach Larry Cochell. "This is a young team and they need to learn how to come from behind. We could have had better at bats down the stretch, but we'll learn from this. Rocky (Cherry) pitched a good game and most of the hits he gave up just found holes. (Mark) Roberts came in and pitched great for us."
Charlie Frasier continued his hot start to this season, going 2-for-4 with an RBI. On the weekend, he was 7-for-9 with two home runs, nine RBI and a slugging percentage of 1.444. Jason Fransz also went 2-for-4 and drove in OU's first run and is batting .600 on the young season.
Oklahoma takes on Southeast Missouri State in a three-game set at L. Dale Mitchell Park next weekend. Friday's game will begin at 3 p.m., Saturday's first pitch will come at 11 a.m. and finally, the teams will battle at noon next Sunday.
