NORMAN, Okla. - Oklahoma men's gymnastics assistant coach Guard Young had perhaps the most successful international meet of his amateur career this past week when he brought home a gold medal on the vault (9.212) and a bronze on the still rings (9.462) at the Chunichi Cup in Nagoya, Japan. Young rounded out the weekend by claiming fourth place on the floor exercise and pommel horse and finishing fifth in the all-around.
"Guard really put forth a great effort at this meet, which was a tough one for us, coming so close to World Championships," US Coach and OU Head Coach Mark Williams said. "He came very close to medals on all the events he competed on tonight and was one of the most consistent gymnasts in the competition."
Last month Young competed in the World Gymnastics Championships, along with current OU gymnast Brett Covey, and finished 13th on the floor exercise.
Fellow American Todd Thornton captured the bronze medal on the high bar. The United States contingent nabbed three medals on the weekend.
