NORMAN, Okla. - Senior Brett Covey of the Oklahoma men's gymnastics team made the Canadian World Championship Team this past weekend by scoring 9.500 on the still rings during national qualifying meet. Covey will remain in Canada for the next month to train with the national team in preparation for the Nov. 20-24 World Championships that will be held in Decrebon, Hungary. Covey will compete on the still rings.
"I still can't believe that I made the team," said Covey on Sunday. "It was always a dream of mine to compete internationally and for my country."
While Covey trains in Canada he will attempt to increase his start value by adding a new skill to his rings routine.
"I am excited for the opportunity that Brett Covey has to represent Canada on rings at the World Championships," said OU Head Coach Mark Williams. "It is going to be exciting for me as a coach because I will be in Hungary as Guard Young's (USA Team member) personal coach and as Brett's college coach. It will be a great moment in the history of Oklahoma gymnastics."
Young, an OU assistant coach, will compete for the U.S. on the floor exercise. This marks the first time in Oklahoma gymnastics history that the Sooners have had two members of their program competing in the same World Championships.
The defending national champion men's gymnastics team begins its regular season on Jan. 18 at the University of Michigan in a dual meet. Oklahoma opens its home slate at Lloyd Noble Center Feb. 14 against Iowa at 7 p.m.
