Oklahoma vs. Texas A&M

January 05, 2002 | Men's Basketball

OU HEAD COACH KELVIN SAMPSON
On the game:
"The thing that impressed me the most about our team's performance tonight was our defense during the first fifteen minutes of the first half and the first seven minutes of the second half. It was important to get all of our players as much playing time as possible tonight because we have six players who haven't played in a Big 12 game. This was a good first conference game for us and I was pleased with our effort. We have two difficult games coming up in Connecticut and Texas Tech and this was a good start."

On Texas A&M:
"I have to compliment Melvin Watkins' kids because I didn't think that they ever gave up. They just need to keep listening to Melvin and they will get where they need to be."

On senior forward Aaron McGhee:
"Aaron's a rhythm guy and he's playing with good rhythm right now as well as confidence. He's such a good shooter. He can make a lot of different types of shots. He's also not turning the ball over and that's something we've been working on."

OU FORWARD DARYAN SELVY
On the game:
"I just wanted to come out and sustain the pace our team had set. Anyone can beat anyone on a given night, and we didn't want to let them come in here and win. We wanted to come out and play the whole 40 minutes... hard. We needed to finish strong and I just wanted to do all I could to help us come out on top."

On his two three-pointers tonight:
"I wanted to have confidence and play ball. My teammates were looking for me on the trail and I wanted to knock it down for them. I was feeling it a little and they were open shots, so I took them. It was nice to knock them down and get some confidence in my shot."

OU SENIOR AARON McGHEE
On the game:
"I wanted to go out there and play as hard as possible. We're on a good win streak here and we wanted to keep it up. We saw some other Big 12 games today and the favored teams lost. That wasn't going to happen here if we had anything to do with it. I did my best to stay focused and play hard."

On his slow start and hot finish to tonight's game:
"I got into some foul trouble early on and didn't start off too well. I knew coming out of halftime, I wanted to go in, play hard and get myself going. I made a couple baskets and then my fingers got hot. I could feel it, so I kept on shooting when I was open. It felt good out there in the second half."

TEXAS A&M HEAD COACH MELVIN WATKINS
On Oklahoma:
"I think Kelvin has a Final Four caliber type team. They are a very talented basketball team. They can execute, rebound and shoot the basketball and they can score inside and out. They were too much for us."

On OU's balance:
"You can try to stop on of OU's go-to guys but they have someone else who can hurt you. They just have so many weapons that they can throw at you.

On Andy Slocum:
"He really battled out there. We have been hoping to get some offensive from him and we got that tonight. He was gaining confidence and our players were gaining confidence and going to him."

On his team:
"I have had to make some changes on the team and deal with some attitudes. There have been some internal problems we needed to deal with and now we need to get back to the business of playing basketball."
