Norman, Okla. - University of Oklahoma Head Basketball Coach Sherri Coale helped coach the USA Basketball Women's Junior World Championship Team to a gold medal Sunday with a 90-67 victory over Brazil at George Washington's Smith Center in Washington, D.C.
Twelve of the nation's best high school seniors and college freshmen comprise the team that is coached by University of Connecticut Coach Geno Auriemma, who's assisted by Coale and Northeastern University's Willette White.
En route to its 4-0 record, the U.S. defeated Brazil twice, 81-60 and 90-67, China, 97-51, and Japan, 95-52. In the consolation game Sunday, China defeated Japan, 82-61, to earn its first victory of the tournament and the bronze medal.
All four teams, used the Invitational as a warm-up to the 2001 FIBA Junior World Championship which will be held in Brno, Czech Republic, from July 14-22. The United States travels to the Czech Republic on July 10 for a two-day training camp prior to the start of the championship games.
The USA will face Lithuania in preliminary round play Saturday, July 14.
