Men's Golf Tied For Sixth At NCAA Championships

NORMAN, Okla. - The 11th-ranked University of Oklahoma men's golf team is tied for sixth place after Wednesday's first round of action at the 2001 NCAA Men's Golf Championships in Durham, N.C. The Sooners posted a first-round score of 294 (+6) and trail second-place Georgia Tech by only five strokes. The second-ranked Yellow Jackets are nine strokes behind 13th-ranked Arizona, who currently leads the 30-team field with a score of 280 (-8).
Leading the way for OU was sophomore Matt Cohn (La Jolla, Calif.), who fired a first-round 71 (-1) to finish the day tied for ninth. After finishing the front nine at one-over, Cohn birdied the 14th and 16th holes to get back to one-under.
One shot behind Cohn is senior Kelsey Cline (Yukon, Okla.), who also birdied two holes on the back nine at No.13 and No. 17 and finished at even-par (72). Cline stands tied for 20th with nine other golfers.
Two Sooners playing in their first NCAA Championships were in contention all afternoon. Sophomore John Kidwell (Dallas, Texas) was even after the first nine holes and finished with a 75 (+3), placing him tied for 66th. Meanwhile, freshman Martin Flores (Mansfield, Texas) finished one stroke behind Kidwell with a 76 to tie for 96th. Junior Cody Freeman (Arnett, Okla.) rounded out the OU scores with a 77.
The Sooners resume play on the No. 10 tee at the Duke Golf Club Thursday at 7:18 a.m.
