NORMAN, Okla. - Oklahoma Head Women's Basketball Coach Sherri Coale has announced the hiring of former Norman High School player and member of the Connecticut 2000 National Championship team, Stacy Hansmeyer, to the Sooners' coaching staff.
Hansmeyer, a 1996 Norman High graduate, brings a tremendous amount of playing experience to the OU program. While at Connecticut, Hansmeyer helped Head Coach Geno Auriemma produce an overall record of 132-10 (.930 winning percentage) and win four Big East regular season and tournament titles. UConn also participated in the national tournament all four years, winning the NCAA Championship in 1999-2000, advancing to the Elite Eight twice (1996-97, 1997-98) and Sweet 16 once (1998-99).
As a Huskie (1997-2000), she averaged 5.0 points and 3.2 rebounds per game. The four-year letterwinner also finished her career ranked eighth in career field goal percentage (54.5%) and tied for seventh for most career games played (134).
Hansmeyer spent last season as a student assistant on Huskies' coaching staff while completing her bachelor's of science degree in communication and graduating in May.
The 23-year old is excited about her first full-time coaching job and returning to Norman. "It's a dream come true for me," said Hansmeyer. "Coach Coale has been my role model for years. I envisioned this would happen someday and it's something I've always wanted to do. Coach Coale and her staff are a perfect fit for me. I'm excited about the opportunities ahead of me and for this program."
As a former player under Coale at Norman High, Hansmeyer earned USA Today honorable mention All-America and Parade Magazine Third Team All-America accolades as a senior (1995-96). She led Norman High to the state 6A title with a 27-1 record, contributing 17.0 points and 9.0 rebounds per game her final prep season.
"We are so excited about adding Stacy to our staff," said Coale. "She has championship experience and is one of the fiercest competitors with whom I have ever come in contact. She has a solid understanding of the game and is a passionate, energetic young coach who has a lot to offer our student athletes.
"She is an Oklahoma girl who left for awhile but always dreamed of coming home, and I'm thrilled that we have the opportunity to bring her back. I know her heart and her desire to help bring a women's basketball national championship to the University of Oklahoma."
Hansmeyer joins current OU assistants Jan Ross and Bo Overton, while Deren Boyd takes over director of basketball operations duties. Boyd served as an assistant coach last season and was an adminstrative assistant and interim assistant coach during the 1999-2000 campaign. Tara DeGiusti concludes Coale's staff as an adminstrative assistant.
