NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma men's gymnastics team handed out team awards last weekend, including most valuable gymnast, most improved gymnast, most inspirational gymnast and the Brave Heart award.
Steve Van Etten was named most valuable gymnast after earning All-America honors on three events this season - floor exercise, pommel horse and horizontal bar. The senior was one of only two gymnasts to attain All-America status in three events. He was also named Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Co-Athlete of the Year and won the conference title on vault.
Sophomore Brett Covey went from competing in only two events to earning All-America honors on the still rings and was named the most improved gymnast. Covey, a walk-on, was a specialist on rings and spent much of the season ranked first or second nationally on that event.
After overcoming a myriad of injuries during his OU career, redshirt-freshman Quinn Rowell was honored as most inspirational gymnast. Rowell missed his freshman season with a stress fracture in his shin. While competing in a junior meet, he fractured his tibia and had to have surgery to insert a screw and repair his meniscus. Later in the summer, Rowell fractured a vertebrae in his spine and had to spend several months in a neck brace to stabilize his neck and spine. Despite these injuries, he was still able to compete in one meet this season.
Senior Gabe Hansen was named the Brave Heart Award winner, given to the senior that has overcome the most hardship in his career. Hansen only competed for OU for three seasons, joining the team for the spring 1999 semester. He missed much of his first campaign due a torn biceps. Hansen also missed portions of the 2000 and 2001 seasons with injury but rebounded to compete in the all-around at this year's NCAA Championships.
The OU men's gymnastics team finished as the NCAA runner-up, claimed its third MPSF title and spent most of the season ranked first nationally. A record six OU gymnasts earned All-America honors in 10 events. Three Sooners also claimed individual conference crowns.
