OU Women's Tennis Captures Win Over No. 63 Colorado

BOULDER, Colo. - The University of Oklahoma women's tennis team pulled a 4-3 upset over 63rd-ranked Colorado in its final match of the regular season Saturday at the Kittredge Tennis Complex. The victory marks the Sooners' first conference win of the year and improved their record to 5-12 overall.

Led by senior standout Viviana Mracnova, the Sooners scored all four of their points in singles action. Mracnova picked up the straight-set win, 6-3, 6-3, over CU's Dominique Lemperle at the No. 1 slot, improving her record to 12-4 overall and 9-2 in conference action and extending her winning streak to six. Sophomore Annette Bryntesson cruised to a 6-0, 6-3, win at No. 3 singles and Melissa Mendieta defeated Suzanne Bjorkman, 6-4, 6-4, at the fourth spot. Sophomore Joni Helleland rounded out the scoring at No. 6 singles, easily dropping Tracy Moore, 6-1, 6-2. Oklahoma's Stephanie Sajbert fell in a tight match at No. 2 singles, 7-6, 6-3, and Tiffany Streeter lost at the No. 5 slot, 6-2, 6-1.

Oklahoma, ahead 4-2, called the match early because of the weather, giving CU the doubles point. The Sooners were leading 4-2 at the No. 1 position and the Buffs were in command, 6-2, at the second spot and, 7-2, at the third, before the match was retired.

Colorado, which is coached by former Oklahoma assistant coach and player Nicole Kenneally, fell to 8-13 on the season and 3-8 in league action. The Sooners have defeated Colorado in their final regular season match two straight seasons.

The victory provides momentum heading into next week's Big 12 Championships in Waco, Texas. The event runs Thursday, April 26, through Sunday, April 29, and is hosted by Baylor University. The men's and women's Big 12 Championships will both be played at the Baylor Tennis Center and Streich Tennis Courts.
