NORMAN, Okla. - OU men's gymnastics assistant Guard Young helped lead his USA team to victory this past weekend at the 2001 American Team Cup in Honolulu, Hawaii.
The Olympic-format competition featured six U.S. athletes, including 2000 Olympians Paul and Morgan Hamm, squaring off against China and Romania. The U.S. team topped China, the reigning Olympic team champions, 220.675 to 215.000. Romania, who won this event in 2000, finished third with a 210.000.
Young contributed rings (9.4) and vault (9.25) scores to the U.S. team total.
"I'm excited that we won and it felt good to get back into competition again," Young said after the meet, "but now I'm just anxious to get back with the guys from OU and take them to NCAA Championships."
OU Head Coach Mark Williams couldn't be with Young in Hawaii (he remained in Norman to coach the OU collegiate team, which will compete for the national title next weekend), but he was still proud of his longtime pupil's efforts.
"I think that Guard did a great job, considering this is his first meet of the season," Williams said. "This is a good start for him, looking towards 2004."
In addition to his coaching duties at OU, Young, who finished 10th at the 2000 U.S. Olympic Trials, is currently training for the 2004 Games.
NBC will air the American Team Cup competition April 7 at 3 p.m. CDT.
