NORMAN, Okla. - The awards continue to pile up for the Oklahoma women's basketball team. Head Coach Sherri Coale was named the National Coach of the Year by the Women's Basketball Journal, while Stacey Dales received first-team All-America honors and LaNeisha Caufield earned first-team Defensive All-America honors, the publication announced Tuesday.
Coale, who was also named the Big 12 Coach of the Year in 2001 for the second-straight season, has lead the Sooners to 24-4 record, an outright Big 12 regular season championship and a No. 7 ranking on the season, heading into this week's Big 12 Tournament. In 2000, her Oklahoma team won a share of the Big 12 title and advanced to the NCAA "Sweet Sixteen."
Dales is the 2001 Big 12 Player of theYear and is currently averaging 16.4 points, 5.3 rebounds and shooting 47.6 percent from the field. She also dishes out 7.8 assists a game, tops in the Big 12 and sixth in the NCAA. Dales is a finalist for the Conseco Step Up Award, which honors the nation's top point guard. The All-America honor marks her second of the season, as she was also named a first-team All-American by the Women's Basketball News Service.
Caufield leads the nation in steals with 4.4 thefts per game and has pocketed four-plus steals in 20 games this season. She also tops the team and ranks seventh in the Big 12 Conference in scoring with 16.8 points a game. The junior from Ada, Okla., was also named the College Defensive Player of the Year by Women's Basketball News Service and earned second-team All-Big 12 honors.
The top-seeded Sooners open play in the Big 12 Conference Tournament Wednesday at Noon against ninth-seeded Kansas. The Jayhawks defeated Oklahoma State, 66-56, in opening round action on Tuesday.
