A Closer Look

BERKELEY, Calif. - The top-ranked University of Oklahoma men's gymnastics team claimed its third-straight Mountain Pacific Sports Federation championship tonight in Berkeley, Calif. OU scored an NCAA best 217.725, eclipsing its own mark of 217.300 set on March 10 against Ohio State and Stanford. The Sooners outdistanced host California (213.925), third-place Nebraska (205.325), Stanford (203.550), Air Force (196.550) and UC-Santa Barbara (195.525).

Several Sooners turned in season high performances. Sophomore Daniel Furney shattered his former season best on the parallel bars (9.30) and tied a season high on floor exercise with an 8.70. Freshman David Iammatteo set one career high and tied another when he scored an 8.85 on parallel bars and an 8.65 on floor. Two other Sooners - seniors Brendan O'Neil and Steve Van Etten - posted season highs on floor with a 9.70 and 9.20, respectively. Pommel horse school record holder Josh Landis scored a season-best 9.40 on his top event. As a team, OU set season highs on still rings (37.50) and parallel bars (35.825).

Gabe Hansen placed third in the all-around by posting a 51.600.

Eight Oklahoma gymnasts advanced to the individual event finals - Brendan O'Neil (floor), Josh Landis (floor and pommel horse), Daniel Furney (pommel horse and parallel bars), Brett Covey (rings), Shannon Carrion (rings), Steve Van Etten (vault and horizontal bar) and Everette Bierker (vault, parallel bars and horizontal bar).

Jock Stevens did not compete due to a sprained neck and concussion suffered in practice while the team was in California but is expected to return for the NCAA Qualifier.

"I'm extremely proud," said OU Head Coach Mark Williams. "This was our three-peat as conference champions. I'm especially pleased that we posted a season high score, the best in the nation this year, that will keep us ranked No. 1 heading into the NCAA Qualifier. It was a great team effort. We are on track for our last step and goal in a series of competitions this year where we plan to post the highest score at the NCAA team finals."

The MPSF Championships continue tomorrow with the individual event finals. Competition begins at 7 p.m.
